Title: Beyond an Illusory Utopia: On Léonora Miano’s Conception and Practice of Afropea

Abstract: Léonora Miano is one of the most representative Afro-descendant intellectuals in contemporary French literature and thought. The concept of Afropea that she advocates has generated extensive debate in Europe. Critics have argued that Miano’s vision of Afropea constitutes an unattainable utopian dream and therefore fails to offer a viable solution to contemporary social problems. In response to such critiques, this article examines Miano’s concept through three interrelated dimensions—terminological naming, literary practice, andidentity reconstruction—in order to demonstrate the material grounding, practical orientation, and rational spirit underlying her conception of Afropea. It argues that Miano’s project transcends the logic of Illusory Utopia and instead embodies an active and combative form of utopian thought. Her vision of a future social order not only opens up a multicultural space in which Afro-European communities may inhabit the border, but also provides significant intellectual resources for building a community with a shared future for humanity based on the coexistence of differences.

Keywords: Léonora Miano; Afropea; Afropean; inhabiting the border; utopia
