2024 Thematic Conference of the China-Africa Language and Culture Comparative Studies Committee and Symposium on "African (Diasporic) Literature from the Perspective of Global History"

Convened in Taiyuan from 31 August to 1 September 2024, this thematic meeting was organized by the China-Africa Language and Culture Comparative Studies Committee and jointly hosted by the School of Foreign Languages, the Kafka and Comparative Literature Research Center, and the School of Philosophy at Shanxi University. The conference gathered more than 100 scholars from across China for intensive discussion of African and African diaspora literature within the wider framework of global history. The agenda covered a broad range of topics, including African and diasporic writing in relation to the global history of capitalism and colonialism, abolitionist movements, twentieth-century wars, Third World movements, decolonization, African independence, world literature, language policy, and China-Africa area studies. Eleven keynote speeches addressed both classical and emerging issues in the field. Presentations examined colonial discourse and African modernization, the worldliness of African literature, cosmopolitan thought, Fanon and revolutionary politics, African American nonfiction travel writing, race and Black phenomenology, Toni Morrison’s aesthetics, Ben Okri’s postcolonial ecological imagination, and albinism writing in Angolan literature, among other topics. A notable theme was the integration of new technologies into literary research and translation, including discussion of AI-assisted work in African and African diaspora literary studies.

2023 Annual Conference of the Special Committee on Sino-African Language and Cultural Comparative Studies and Symposium on “African and African Diasporic Literature in the 21st Century: Reflections on and Prospects for Globalization”

Held at the School of Foreign Languages of Yunnan University in Kunming, the 2023 Annual Conference of the Special Committee on Sino-African Language and Cultural Comparative Studies focused on the theme “African and African Diasporic Literature in the 21st Century: Reflections on and Prospects for Globalization.” Jointly organized by the School of Foreign Languages of Yunnan University and the African and African American Literature Institute of Hangzhou Dianzi University, the conference brought together more than one hundred scholars, researchers, and postgraduate students from over forty universities across China. It also received support from several major academic journals and publishing institutions in the field.

International Symposium on “Globalizing Black Studies: Perspectives on Art, Literature, History and Culture”

Held online via Zoom from 26 to 28 July 2021, the International Symposium on “Globalizing Black Studies: Perspectives on Art, Literature, History and Culture” brought together 73 invited scholars from the United States, Germany, Türkiye, Algeria, and mainland China. The symposium was jointly organized by the China-Africa Language and Culture Comparative Studies Committee of the China Comparative Study Association of Chinese and Foreign Languages and Cultures, the African American and African Diaspora Studies Program at Indiana University Bloomington, and the Department of Foreign Languages of China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing), with additional support from Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. The event focused on African and African diasporic studies in a global context and created an important platform for sustained international academic exchange.

Held in Chengdu on 13–14 December 2019, the inaugural meeting of the China-Africa Language and Cultural Comparative Studies Committee, together with the symposium on “The Formation and Circulation of Classics in African and African Diasporic Literature,” marked a significant milestone in the development of African and African diasporic literary studies in China. Jointly organized by the newly established committee, the School of Foreign Languages at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, and the African and African American Literature Institute of Hangzhou Dianzi University, the event also received support from a number of universities, journals, and research centers. More than one hundred scholars from over forty universities and research institutions in China and abroad participated in the conference.
